Proposed 'No Dogs in Cemetery' Policy to go to Medfield Town Meeting

The policy calls for issuing fines to anyone who walks their dogs in Vine Lake Cemetery.

A proposed policy to issue fines to dog walkers in Medfield’s Vine Lake Cemetery will need to go to a vote, the Medfield Board of Selectmen has ruled, according to an update by Selectman Richard DeSorgher Thursday.

The proposal comes from Medfield Department of Public Works Superintendent Ken Feeney and Cemetery Commissioner Tom Sweeney, who said they have received complaints of dogs running off their leashes and of dog walkers not picking up after their pets in the cemetery.

The two officials recommended issuing a $50 fine for first-time offenders and a $100 fine for a second offense, with the recommendation that the Board of Selectmen and Medfield Police enforce the regulations. The new policy would also include the fine and regulations be added to the current “No Dog in Cemetery” sign postings at either entrance of Vine Lake Cemetery.
