Medfield Transfer Station Volunteers and HS Students to Collect Styrofoam on March 6!
There will be a collection of Styrofoam for recycling on Sat., March 6 from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm in the swap area at the Medfield Transfer Station. Volunteers will team up with Medfield HS students to collect polystyrene #6 items, commonly referred to as “Styrofoam” with very specific guidelines. Styrofoam has a negative impact on the environment and human health. It is bulky so takes up a lot of landfill space and it breaks easily into tiny pieces which spread into water sources.
At this time, our recycling partner will ONLY accept two types of Styrofoam:
- White packing forms or blocks, i.e. protective packing for appliances, gadgets and electronics
- White coolers, i.e. for food or medical use
This collection is for #6 polystyrene ONLY, nothing labeled #4 or #5 or not included in the list above can be recycled.
Please note some of the acceptable items may not be labeled with a #6 or recycling triangle, but will be collected if they are the correct item types. It is very important that the foam products be CLEAN and DRY, in pristine condition, so no:
- Colored foam
- Food trays or cups
- Marker, glue, or cardboard attached to items
- Nothing dirty, dusty or moldy- it can damage the recycling equipment
Items not meeting the criteria for recycling will have to be disposed. Residents are asked to help make this collection a success so we can continue to work with the recycling company and hold additional collections later this year.
