Victim In Fatal Route 109 Crash Identified

Police say a speeding Jeep involved in the crash nearly struck a police cruiser moments earlier.

MEDFIELD, MA — A speeding Jeep nearly struck a Medfield police cruiser before being involved in a fatal three-car crash on Route 109 Tuesday, according to police.

Chief Robert Meaney, Jr. on Wednesday identified the person who died in the crash as 31-year-old James Tobia, of Falmouth.

The driver of the Jeep was airlifted to Tufts Medical Center. Police said his identity and any potential criminal charges will be withheld pending the result of an investigation. Police have been unable to speak with him due to his medical condition.

Police said a motor vehicle stop was being cleared at around 1:33 p.m. when an officer saw a black Jeep SUV speeding eastbound, nearly colliding with the cruiser from the opposite direction. The officer soon after got information about the crash, which he quickly located in the area of Pederzini Drive.

Medfield, Westwood, Walpole, and Millis Fire Departments responded to the scene. Westwood, Dover, and Millis Police Departments helped with traffic detours.

The crash is being investigated as police interview multiple witnesses.
