The Inspirational "Stones for the Soul" Project...

Jen Bassett and Christy Callahan are Reading Specialists at the Dale Street School. They, along with 25 fourth grade students and 19 fifth grade students created "Stones for the Soul" for the Medfield community to enjoy and to be inspired.

Bassett and Callahan explained that , “Stones for the Soul”, was a way for their students to share their amazing thinking with their community.

These students have been reading and discussing a variety of books and were tasked with finding descriptive language and analyzing illustrations and how they contribute to comprehension. Finally, the students synthesized this information and crafted a theme statement, or message, that the author wants readers to learn.

As a culminating activity, groups of students collaborated and wrote "Inspirational" messages that represent their themes. Students planned how to visually represent their thinking on beach stones using colors, images, and symbols, students brought their messages to life.

These stones, along with a flag displaying the cover of the book and a short note, were placed around the Medfield community on June 15th for all to appreciate.

These stones are eye catching and their messages are heartfelt. Their hope is that each person who reads the message will find them meaningful, impactful and inspiring!
