What were you doing in 1987?

The longest-serving mayor in the Commonwealth, our own Michael McGlynn, was re-elected to his 13th term Tuesday. McGlynn was first elected mayor in 1987.

To put his 24 years of office is perspective, here's a list of things McGlynn has outlasted:

1.) Ronald Reagan’s prostate: On January 5, 1987,  President Ronald Reagan has prostate surgery, causing speculation about his physical fitness to govern.

 2.) The American Motors Corporation: On March 2, 1987 American Motors Corporation is acquired by the Chrysler Corporation.

 3.) The Iran-Contra scandal: On March 4, 1987,  President Reagan addresses the American people on the Iran-Contra Affair, acknowledging that his overtures to Iran had 'deteriorated' into an arms-for-hostages deal.

4.) The belief that Euro Disney is a good idea: On March 24, 1987,  Michael Eisner and French Prime Minister Jacques Chirac sign an agreement to build Euro Disney, now called Disneyland Paris.

5.) The Tracey Ullman Show (But not The Simpsons): On April 19, 1987, The Simpsons cartoon first appears as a series of shorts on The Tracey Ullman Show.

6.) Calls for the Berlin Wall to be torn down: On June 12, 1987 President Ronald Reagan challenges Soviet Premier Mikhail Gorbachev to tear down the Berlin Wall.

7.) The political career of Pat Robinson: On Sept. 17, 1987, at a small rally in Harlem, televangelist Pat Robertson announces his candidacy for the 1988 Republican presidential nomination

8.) The American public's fascination with young children falling down wells: From Oct. 14-16, 1987, the U.S. is caught up in a drama that unfolds on television as a young child, Jessica McClure, falls down a well in Midland, Texas, and is later rescued.

9.) Shock when then Dow drops more than 500 points: October 19, 1987 was given the name "Black Monday" when the Dow Jones industrial average fell more than 500 points. Nowadays, we just call it a bad day and move on.
