Medford’s Home Rule Petition for a local Charter Review Commission will be discussed at a public hearing on Wednesday, June 23rd, Mayor Lungo-Koehn announced today. The State’s Joint Committee on Election Laws will discuss the Home Rule Petition as part of the day’s session, beginning at 10:00am. The hearing will be held virtually. Anyone wishing to testify can submit written testimony by Friday, June 25th at 3:00pm to Michaela.gaziano@masenate.gov and sean.getchell@masenate.gov.  You can also sign onto a petition in support of the City’s Home Rule Petition by filling out a Google form, here: https://forms.gle/u8tDSRNCRaexiPDd8, that the City will submit this week.

Mayor Lungo-Koehn submitted the Home Rule Petition to the State in January, following approval by the Medford City Council.

Through the Home Rule Petition, Medford would be authorized to create a 9-member Commission to review and redraft the City’s Charter, which sets forth the structure, representation, and responsibilities of Medford’s city government. Â
The Charter has not been substantially reviewed or updated in nearly 40 years.
