MEDFORD, MA — Rising Medford artist Pamela Hersch is lighting up the streets of Roxbury for the Roxbury Cultural District's celebration of Nubian Square.

"Nubian Nights" runs weekends from Friday, March 26 to April 11 from 7-10 p.m. The celebration will include jazz, window displays and Hersch's video projections on buildings and storefronts around the square.

Hersch creates larger-than-life art using "video mapping" technology from electronics company Epson, with production support from regional nonprofit LuminArtz.

Hersch, a native of Mexico, attended Berklee College of Music for piano before switching her major to electronic production and design. Originally interested in film scoring and music, her focus shifted from making music for visuals, to making visuals set to music after she took a class on video installation at Mass Art.

She began thinking about how to "dress" a large object with light, and threw herself into 3D mapping and projection after working on the 2017 Illuminus Festival.

Hersch and the LuminArtz team have partnered on large-scale light-based art projects around the region, including the recent "Hatched" at the Hatch Shell, the COVID tribute at the Cape Ann Museum and the ILLUMINUS festival in Downtown Boston.
