Medford Middle School Students Participate in Community Reads
This year's Community Read finished off with over 90 students, teachers, and staff reading one book.

MEDFORD, MA - This year’s Medford Middle School Community Read finished off with over 90 students, teachers, and staff reading the community read book, Fish in a Tree, a release said. New for the 2015-16 school year, the school library community read program included middle school students from both the McGlynn and the Andrews middle schools, a release said. The program had school communities read the same book, participate in activities, and attend a final end-of-year book party, a release said.
The book was popular with middle school students who found inspiration from the main character’s ability to overcome struggles in school; and the power of one teacher and a circle of friends who help her understand how incredible she really is, a release said. It spoke to anyone who’s ever thought there was something wrong with them because they didn’t fit in, a release said.
The community read program was expanded to both middle schools this year due to the generosity of a grant from Bloomberg Philanthropies and the Center for Citizenship and Social Responsibility, a release said. The grant funded books for both school libraries and a book party for those students participating in the program, a release said.
Also new this year was the use of Google Classroom to allow students from both schools to participate in online activities and discussions, a release said.
