Medford Renews Superintendent Contract, Plans For Replacement

Belson, superintendent since 1985, submitted a plan for succession to the School Committee for their future use.

MEDFORD, MA - Superintendent Roy Belson's contract was extended last night but he also gave Medford school officials a plan for how to choose his successor.

Belson, superintendent since 1985, submitted a plan for succession to the School Committee for their future use. "A plan is in place when the appropriate time comes to conduct a search for a future Superintendent of the Medford Public Schools," said Belson.

Last evening, with a 5-2 vote, the Medford School Committee extended Superintendent Roy Belson's contract through next year. Originally appointed in July of 1995, Belson, will begin his twenty-second year as Superintendent in September.

A life- long resident of Medford, Belson graduated from Medford High School in 1964. He began his teaching career in 1968 as a substitute teacher for the Medford Public Schools before being appointed as an English teacher in 1969 at the Roberts Junior High School.

In 1971, when the new high school opened, Belson began teaching English and Social Studies to high school students. In 1975, he was named Coordinator of Alternative Programs and from 1982 until his appointment to Superintendent in 1995, Belson served the Medford Public Schools, in numerous roles, including: Director of Funding, Planning, Development, Personnel and Curriculum.
