Medford Students Win Songwriting Contest With Socially Conscious Music

Two Medford High School students were recognized for writing socially relevant songs.

MEDFORD, MA - Two Medford High School students were recognized for writing socially relevant songs.

This 2015-2016 school year, students participated in the Bloomberg Songwriting Challenge - the focus was to create a song that exemplified citizenship: social awareness, empathy, responsibility, and response to current local and world events. Participating songwriters were tasked with writing the lyrics, arranging instrumentation to support the lyrics, as well as recording and performing their songs., a release said.

This year, MHS students Jeremiah Burnett and Lekha Tevari were awarded and recognized for their outstanding musicianship and lyrical messages. Both freshmen, Tevari and Burnett have participated in various musical events at Medford High School such as the talent show, the MHS rap battle, and the Medford Calling rock ensemble, a release said. Through the songwriting challenge, both musicians successfully composed original work- in two very different genres, a release said. Burnett wrote “Free Conscience,” a hip hop song, and Tevari composed “Chasing Dreams,” an alternative pop song.
