Medford Teen Battling Lymphoma Named 'Guns N Hoses' Captain
Derek Marino's "determination, positive attitude and toughness" is what the Medford Police Department is looking for in a captain.
MEDFORD, MA — The Medford Police Department named McGlynn Middle School student Derek Marino its team captain for the sixth annual "Guns N Hoses" hockey game against the Medford Fire Department. Marino was diagnosed with lymphoma last fall at 13 years old.
The community rallied around Marino, holding "D-Team Strong Day" at McGlynn and Andrews Middle School in November. Students were invited to wear blue and white and stop by LoConte Rink after school for pizza and ice skating.
"Derek's determination, positive attitude and toughness is an inspiration to our team, Department and City and it is only fitting he be our Team Captain for the game and present him with a team jersey with his name on it," Medford police wrote on Facebook.
