When Should You Call 9–1-1? Medford PD Breaks It Down

MEDFORD, MA — While it's often obvious when you should dial 9-1-1, sometimes situations can be a bit more nuanced and a Medford resident may wonder: Who should I contact?

Medford Police have set up a helpful guide on their website about when you should or should not dial 9-1-1.

You should dial 9-1-1 if:

  • It's a medical emergency
  • You are in doubt as to the emergency status of an incident
  • There's a crime in progress (personal injury or damage to property) that requires police intervention
  • There are any personal injuries or dangerous situations related to motor vehicle accidents

Times when you don't need to dial 9-1-1?

  • For power failures (where no injury is present), call 781-396-9400
  • If you need to file a report about a past incident, call 781-391-6404

And remember: False 9-1-1 phone calls are dangerous and wasteful, such as when a woman dialed 9-1-1 because McDonald's ran out of chicken nuggets:
