177 Days Later, MelroseWakefield COVID Vaccinations Wrap Up
Well over 17,000 people have been inoculated against COVID-19 since the clinic started Dec. 16.

MELROSE, MA — A full schedule of vaccinations Friday will add to the 17,239 people inculcated against COVID-19 at MelroseWakefield Hospital.
Then, it's all over.
The hospital is ending its vaccine clinic 177 days after it started. Since Dec. 16, it has administered 33,485 doses of the vaccine heading into Friday. The first few days of the clinic were exceptionally emotional for the virus-weary hospital.

The hospital played a major part in 72 percent of Melrosians and 69 percent of Wakefielders having received at least one vaccination shot, according to Department of Public Health data released Thursday.
“We are proud to have been able to vaccinate so many people in our community," Dr. Steven Sbardella said.

But that still leaves a lot of people without protection from the virus.
"Thankfully, vaccination rates are plateauing throughout the region," Sbardella said. "Although many of the restrictions are being lifted, we all need to be vigilant and be aware. If you have not yet been vaccinated, please consider doing so. It is the best defense, not only for you and your family, but for the whole community."
As of late March, 130 people died at MelroseWakefield due to COVID-19 complications. More than 860 people had been treated for the virus there.
Hospital administrators thanks everyone who had a hand in the monumental effort, including nurses, nurse practitioners, nursing students, nursing instructors, physicians, pharmacists, registration staff, the emergency department, hospital greeters, environmental services, information services, rehabilitation services, food services, occupational health, facilities and more.
