The position, previously filled by Bridget Alverson, who served the Mayor’s office for 12 years, will have a similar function with added communications responsibilities. Garcia, a fluent Spanish speaker, holds a public communications degree from Syracuse University, and brings with her over ten years’ worth of private sector experience.
Garcia hopes to help Mayor Brodeur further his mission to increase the Office’s ability to share key information with residents and tell the story of the great work City staff completes for residents each day.

“Honest, comprehensive, and readily available communication is paramount, particularly during a public health emergency, and during a time when our nation is reckoning with institutional racism,” Garcia said. “Melrosians deserve to know how their government is serving them, without having to jump through administrative hoops or wade through jargon to find out.”
Garcia said her focus will be on increasing engagement and streamlining the Office’s communication strategy to ensure information is disseminated accurately and efficiently, in addition to providing administrative support to the Mayor’s Office.
“I’m really looking forward to working with Brianna,” Patrick Prendergast, Chief of Staff to Mayor Brodeur said. “Being able to effectively communicate frequently and clearly with residents about all the work and initiatives the Mayor is involved in is imperative as we seek to move the Melrose community forward. Brianna’s skills are critical to achieving that goal, and I am appreciative of the warm welcome so many staff and residents have provided her already,” Prendergast said.
Brianna Garcia joined the Office of the Mayor on January 21, 2021.
