Former Melrose Alderman, Business Owner George Barner Dies at 104

George Brenneman Barner, a former Melrose Board of Alderman and business owner who passed away at 104 in Kennebunk, Maine, on Sept. 10, will have a memorial service this weekend.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12 at First Parish of Kennebunk Unitarian Universalist Church, according to an obituary posted on the Portland Press Herald website.

Barner was born on Dec. 20, 1908 in Webster City, Iowa, according to an obituary posted on the Dennett, Craig and Pate Funeral Homes website. He attended several colleges in pursuit of his law degree, including Grinnell College, Harvard College, Harvard Law School and Boston University.

"Barner’s legal career spanned more than thirty five years and included practicing in both large and small firms from New York, to Boston, to eventually establishing his own firm of Barner & Lundquist in Melrose, Massachusetts," reads the funeral home obituary. "There, he advised clients in all aspects of the law and was instrumental in the approval and construction of numerous prestigious housing developments throughout Massachusetts including Wingaersheek Beach and New Seabury on the Cape. 

"He served two terms as Alderman of the City of Melrose and also served in the active Coast Guard during World War II."
