MELROSE, MA — The Middlesex Sheriff's Office recently removed graffiti from public areas around the city.

Graffiti was scrubbed from Mary Foley Park, the Lincoln, Roosevelt and High schools, Crystal Street by Ell Pond and Foss Park.

The graffiti was mostly signatures and didn't contain a clear message, Melrose Police Chief Mike Lyle said in a statement.

The graffiti was pointed out by residents.

"It is disappointing to find graffiti at local playgrounds and memorial sites," Lyle said. "The Melrose Police Department appreciates the community for bringing attention to the issue and thanks the Middlesex Sheriff's Office for their help in addressing it."

The graffiti was removed from city-owned property, and private property owners are being made aware of graffiti on their property.

More graffiti will be removed in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, police will keep an eye on the areas in an attempt to identify whoever is tagging property.

"We’re proud to work with Mayor Brodeur and Chief Lyle on this graffiti removal project," said Middlesex Sheriff Peter J. Koutoujian. "We look forward to continuing to partner with the Mayor and Chief on efforts to maintain and improve public safety throughout Middlesex County."
