Health Director: Rain and Heat to Increase Mosquito Population
Here's tips from Melrose Health Director Ruth Clay for keeping away from mosquitoes - and related diseases - this summer.

The Melrose Health Department reports that recent rain and summer heat may cause an increase in the mosquito population this month.
Here are some tips from city Health Director Ruth Clay to help minimize your exposure to this summer pest:

- Pick a repellent with an EPA-approved active ingredient
- Use long sleeves to cover up when possible
- Repair screens
- Remove standing water to help reduce mosquito populations (bird baths, tires, lawn ornaments)
- Teach children to be aware of mosquito activity around them and avoid it
City mosquito trapping and testing began June 17. You can check your risk levels throughout the season by going to the state Department of Health's website.
