Learn to Knit, Summer Programs End & This Day in Melrose History

5 things you need to know today, Tuesday, Aug. 6.

1. Clear skies: Tuesday will be clear in the morning then partly cloudy this afternoon. Highs in the upper 70s.

2. This day in Melrose history: Police officers endured a “lively chase” with a gang of drunken men that put a board over train tracks in Melrose just before midnight, Aug. 6 1905. Two were arrested, with police later saying the board could’ve easily derailed a passenger train just minutes from approaching the scene.

3. It’s that time of year again: It’s only early August, but summer already shows signs of fading - today is the last day for the Melrose Recreation Department’s summer youth programs.
