Bishop Fenwick High School’s Drama Department is pleased to present Stephen Sondheim’s musical Into the Woods March 13, 14 and 15.
Featured in the cast of Fenwick students from all over the greater North Shore area are Melrose residents Garrett Collins as the Mysterious Man, and Shayla Jamieson as Wendy.
One of Sondheim’s most popular works, made even more popular by the recent Disney film, Into the Woods is a musically sophisticated show, being directed by Wakefield resident Dr. Kellie Tropeano, a member of the music faculty at Fenwick. “Into the Woods has always been one of my favorite shows. It is musically and creatively quite extraordinary and after working with the BF students just a few short months, I knew they would be up for the challenge. It is unlike anything we’ve done before combining difficult music, bigger than life sets, a full orchestra, suspenseful, funny, and heartwarming drama, and skilled actors who will challenge all of your preconceived notions of the fairy tale characters you know and love. This year we’ve had the added challenge of working around the numerous snow days, but the students have stayed the course and put together something I am very proud of. I really hope the community at large will come out and see this superb show to support our dedicated and talented students.”

Producer Laurel Larivee, a member of the Art Faculty at Fenwick says the show is a fun, yet dark, musical that warns people to be careful what they wish for, because they just might get it. “Into the Woods starts out reminding us about all of our favorite fairy tale characters and their wished for happy endings. The second act shows you what can happen when you get those wishes!”
The powerhouse Broadway musical Into the Woods combines your favorite fairytale characters with the Broadway magic of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine to create a rare modern classic. The story follows a baker and his wife who wish to have a child, the Witch who wishes for youth, Cinderella who wishes to attend the King’s Festival, Jack who wishes his cow would give milk, Little Red Riding Hood who wishes for a visit with Granny and Rapunzel who just wishes to be out of the tower. When the baker and his wife learn that they cannot have a child because of a witch’s curse, they set off on a journey to break it. Everyone’s wish is granted, but the consequences of their wishes return to haunt them later with disastrous results. Throw in a couple of princes in agony and an evil step mother and step sisters and the end result is moments of laughter mixed with tears.
