MELROSE, MA — The city will close Lynn Fells Parkway to traffic late Sunday afternoon, opening the usually busy road up to pedestrians as Earth Week comes to a close.

The event is being touted as a Melrose Free Street, a way to encourage pedestrian usage of one of the city's main drags.

The Parkway will be closed to vehicles from 4-6 p.m. from Melrose Street to Tremont Street, welcoming people who want to walk, bike or play in the area.

"I encourage you to leave your car at home, come out, and enjoy the space!" Mayor Paul Brodeur tweeted.

It's unclear if there will be any work being performed just beyond Tremont Street to address the Vinton Street water main break from earlier this week. Crews are expected to spend weeks repairing the chewed-up road.
