Red Hatters May 2021

by Shirley Rabb

On May 1st there was no May Pole or tree to gather around so we waited till ...

May 5th and celebrated Cinco D Mayo right here in Melrose. Eight members went to Mexico Lindo to enjoy the holiday, the food and the beautiful colorful decor of the restaurant. It was a happy day with great food and people talking out loud. Still with only six people aloud at a table we sat close together divided by plexiglass .

The food , as the restaurant was colorful and most delicious. There were take out boxes, and the knowledge that we had spent another happy RED HAT DAY together.

On May16th. we took ourselves to Concord to visit one of the oldest and loveliest Museums. We ordered tickets ahead and only 10 people were allowed in every 1/2 hour, with the option to stay as long as we wanted to. We were a group of 9 today so we were good to go at 11:am. This is a lovely museum with great history of the area. Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau and Louisa May Alcott were all residents in the 1800's, and the guide gave us backgrounds and little known history of the famous residents.

The second floor has one room devoted to the "First shot heard around the world". A great visual screen of the Revolutionary War that started on April 19,1775. One of the lanterns that hung in the North church to warm the troops is on display at the Museum. An illuminating map and close to follow journey through Concord by the British and Revolutionary troops is displayed on the wall. Of course the ride of Paul Revere was one of the featured attractions but we went to see the current exhibit. Every Path laid open for "Women of Concord and their fight for equality". It is a very inspiring display of how we finally got to vote; which led us into a difficult but promising era for women.

There is a quilt on display that was done by the women of the time in the 1800's. A beautiful piece where each square was signed by the woman completing the pictured frame, and each square depicted fashion and facts of the time. A testament that women were, and are, capable of any task.

We ended our tour and headed for the Concord Inn for lunch. Only 5 minutes away we were greeting and shown to our own private room. This was the first time we were able to all sit at one table. What a delightful surprise and special time just knowing things are getting better.

The service and food was excellent with a few take home boxes. We were not rushed, our water and drinks were refilled, without asking, and the waitress was very pleasant.
The prices are a bit higher than most of the places we go but..The Concord Inn, WOW!

This was a special day...A museum of history, a restaurant of renown and all of us at one table.

It can't get any better than this...but we will continue to try.
