NATICK, MA β€” A pickup truck driver suffered life-threatening injuries after slamming into a utility pole on Route 9 west Tuesday afternoon. The driver was trapped in the wreckage and fire crews used cutting equipment to free the person. The crash, which happened at about 4:10 p.m., caused major traffic delays as the evening commute started.

Police said they received several calls about a pickup truck driving erratically along Route 9, hitting several cars on the road. The truck hit a utility pole β€” splitting it in half and knocking it down, Natick police said. The truck flipped over and the driver was trapped inside with serious injuries, police said. After he was freed, he was transported to a Boston-area hospital for treatment.

The crash happened at 1080 Worcester Street and shut down the Route 9 West in the area at Route 27. Traffic was being diverted to Route 30, according to Natick police.
