Natick Boy Gives Up Birthday Presents to Save the Seals
An 8-year-old boy is fighting to stop Canadian hunters from killing seals for their fur.

Like most 8-year-olds, Brady Miller waits anxiously for his birthday each year. But unlike his peers, he isnβt dreaming of opening a huge pile of birthday presents.
Thatβs because Brady doesnβt get dozens of presents for his birthday. But before you start feeling sad for him, you should know this: he doesnβt want them.
Instead, Brady asks his friends and family to donate to The Humane Society of the United States Protect Seals campaign. Between his seventh birthday in 2013 and his eighth in 2014, Brady has raised a total of $1175 for the seals.

He told The Humane Society he thinks his friends will start giving up their birthday presents to save the seals too.

The Humane Societyβs Protect Seals campaign aims to stop the Canadian seal hunt. Each Spring, Canada allows hunters to kill baby seals for their fur. Brady and The Humane Society are dedicated to ending this practice.
One solution theyβve found is simple: buy out the seal hunters. Killing seals accounts for only 5 percent of the huntersβ incomes, according to The Humane Society. So one way to end the hunt would be to compensate hunterβs.
Part of Brady and his friendβs donations goes toward this goal. Unfortunately, the seal hunt is still planned for this spring.
