Services for James Muckerheide, State Nuclear Engineer, WPI Professor

Muckerheide of Needham passed away at the age of 71. His services are next week.

James B. Muckerheide, 71, of Needham died Saturday, November 29 with his family around him. Born in Vineyard Haven, MA, Jim was the son of the late Virginia (Dias) and Arnold John β€œAJ” Muckerheide. He graduated from Reitz Memorial High School, Evansville, IN, and attended Purdue University, and graduated from Lowell Tech with a degree in Nuclear Engineering. Jim worked in the nuclear field for many years, and served as State Nuclear Engineer for Mass Emergency Management Agency from 1991 until he retired in 2010. He founded and served as president of Radiation, Science and Health, an international non-profit organization of scientists advocating for corrections to the federal standards for personal radiation exposure. He also taught at Worcester Polytechnic Institute and ran the CNTS program there.

Jim is survived by his loving wife, Linda M (Nicholas) and his children Lynn Palmatier, Laura Muckerheide, and Matthew Muckerheide as well as five grand children, Madelyn, Bryan, Kathryn and Joseph Palmatier and Andrew Eldridge. He also leaves his brothers, Alan of Oak Bluffs, Donald of Vineyard Haven, Paul and his wife Cheryl of Hampstead, NH and William of Bosque, NM.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Missionaries of Charity where his niece Sister Jean Bernadette has committed her life to doing God’s work among the most needy.
Visiting hours will be held in the Eaton Funeral Home, 1351 Highland Ave Needham on Monday, December 8th from 4pm to 7pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held in St. Joseph Church, 1360 Highland Ave Needham on Tuesday, December 9, at 10AM.
