Smithsonian Offering Free Admission to Area Museums Saturday

There will be free admission Saturday to nearly a dozen museums on the North Shore participating in Smithsonian Magazine’s Museum Day Live!

A number of places in the Boston area, like the Collection of Historical Scientific Instruments in Cambridge, the Gibson House Museum and Historic New England in Boston, and the birthplace of the president, John Fitzgerald Kennedy National Historic Site in Brookline. 

Closer to home, Historic Newton is participating as well. The event will be held at the the Jackson Homestead and Museum, 527 Washington St. in Newton, will be held Saturday, Sept. 28, noon to 5 p.m. Also, at the Durant Kenrick House and Grounds, 286 Waverley Ave. in Newton, on Saturday, Sept. 28, 1:45 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Admission is typically $5 for adults, $4 for students and seniors and children under 16 are always free.

The Museum Day Live! runs annually each September providing free admission to hundreds of museums across the country, just as admission is free to the Smithsonian Museums in Washington, D.C. each day of the year. This is the ninth annual event. Last year, more than 400,000 people nationwide got free admission to a museum.

In order to participate, museum guests need to log on to the Smithsonian Magazine website and enter their name, address and e-mail address and indicate which museum they plan to visit.
