WATCH: Needham High School Junior, Avid Railfan Films Amtrak P448 In Natick

NEEDHAM, MA — He loves the cool noise they make when they're coming in, or flying by the station. The operation behind the scheduling and the equipment is "neat" to him. David Marget is a self-proclaimed "railfan."

The Needham High School Junior says that basically just means he's an "official train enthusiast." Railfans usually video and photograph trains that pass by certain areas, and sometimes head out to catch specific trains.

"For instance, I sometimes go to Western Mass. to see more than 100 car freight trains," said Magnet, who adds that he takes footage in Ayer, South Station, Canton Junction, Princeton, NJ and Union Station in Washington, DC.

"It's amazing how many trains can come through a certain area, like Boston, in a certain amount of time," Marget told Patch. "I especially like rush hour for this reason.

Last weekend, Marget decided that because he had never taken his "railfanning" to Natick before, he'd catch a train there, on film. Heading out with his mom, they drove to the Natick MBTA station to film the Amtrak P448, led by AMKT 152, glide down the rails.

"A shoutout to Amtrak's Lake Shore Limited crew for always being nice and friendly to railfans! Enjoy!" he wrote.

Over the summer, Marget attended a camp run by the National Railroad Historical Society (NRHS) at the University of Delaware. The camp was for High School students who are interested in a career connected to the railroad, and the camp visited places such as the High Speed Maintenance Facility in Wilmington, DE That facility, run by Amtrak, maintains the high speed Acela express trains, which go faster than 150 miles an hour.

Marget is part of the Tech at Needham High School, too, and hopes to go to college near a good railfanning location.

"I've been interested for my entire life," said Marget, who says he loves to sail when he's not railfanning. "When I was an infant, my Dad used to take the train into Wellesley Hills. My first video of a train was in 2013, the LakeShore Limited (which goes Boston to Chicago) is my favorite train."
