10 Things You Need to Know for Marathon Monday in Newton

The 117th Boston Marathon will pass through the middle of Newton today.

More than 25,000 runners will pass through Newton today as the 117th Boston Marathon makes its way from Hopkinton to Boston. Here are 10 things you need to know for Marathon Monday in Newton:

1. Road closures

  • Washington Street (Route 16) from the Wellesley line to Commonwealth Avenue will be closed starting at 8:45 a.m.Β 
  • Commonwealth Avenue (Route 30) from Washington Street to the Boston line will close at 9 a.m.
  • All roads that cross Commonwealth Avenue and Washington Street will effectively be dead ends, as traffic cannot cross the marathon route.
  • All roads will reopen at 5 p.m.

2. MBTA schedule

  • The Red, Blue, Orange, Green and Silver lines will operate on a regular weekday schedule with extra service before and after the marathon.Β 
  • Copley Station will be closed all day. Use Hynes or Arlington Stations.Β TheΒ Berkley StreetΒ entrance/exit of Arlington Station willΒ remain closed and he "B" section of Hynes Convention Center located on Boylston Street will be available for exit only.Β 
  • Customers are urged to load value on to their CharlieCards in advance in order to avoid long lines on Marathon Monday.Β 
  • Commuter Rail service will operate on its regular weekday schedule.Β 
  • Due to the dramatically increased ridership with extreme crowds, customers should expect delays throughout the day and are encouraged to budget additional time for his/her commute.Β 
  • Several bus routes will be diverted during Marathon Monday and customers are strongly encouraged to check T-Alerts andΒ MBTA.comΒ throughout the day for up-to-the-minute information. For a full list of the affected bus routes, checkΒ the MBTA marathon information website.Β 

3. When will the runners make it to Newton?

For the last two years, the wheelchair race participants have generally hit Newton between 10 a.m. - 11 a.m., with the elite runners just behind them. The larger groups of runners generally hit Heartbreak Hill around 12:30 p.m. or so.

9. Weather forecast for today

Remember last year's scorching temperatures? Well, we shouldn't have to worry about that today.Β 

The National Weather Service is forecasting mostly sunny skies today with a high of 59 degrees. It will be a little cooler earlier on in the race, so dress in layers if you plan to head to the route to watch the runners.Β 

There will likely be a slight, northwest breeze, between 6-8 mph.

10. Good places to watch the race
