3 Minutes on a Park Bench with Pearly Evans of New Outlook Home Care
Pearly Evans shares the best piece of business advice she's ever received and recommends three great books.
We emailed Patch partner Pearly Evans of New Outlook Home Care and she explained her definition of success in home care and told us the best thing about working with patients.
Patch: New Outlook Home Care was built on a foundation of care and respect for the elderly. What made you want to focus on that mission?
Pearly Evans: Iβve always had a great love for the elderly and that has only grown over the years. My interaction with my first client as a volunteer drew me very close to the elderly. I have three great loves: the elderly, kids and animals; I chose to focus on the one that I love the most β the elderly.

Patch: What is your definition of success in home care?
Pearly Evans: I define success through the tender love, affection and care that you give to each individual under your care and you know that you did something well for that person and their families.

Patch: If you had to recommend three books to someone, what would they be and why?
Pearly Evans: "The Bible" β I love God. "The Basket of Flowers" by Christoph Von Schmid β one of the first books that I read that was given to me by an elderly person. "The Secret Garden" by Frances Hodgson Burnett β itβs a beautiful story. They each have a lot of meaning in them.
Patch: Can you tell us about the companion services that New Outlook offers?
Pearly Evans: Spending time with someone reading, walking, watching movies with them, giving them one-on-one affectionate care and doing what they like best rather than what we like best.
Patch: Whatβs the best piece of business advice youβve ever been given?
Pearly Evans: In everything you do, you give thanks and love what you do and do it from your heart.
Patch: You specialize in helping people who are dealing with memory loss, Alzheimerβs, strokes, dementia and cancer, just to name a few of your specialties. What is the key to having a successful team that can address such a wide range of medical issues?
Pearly Evans: First, you have to love your job. Second, you have to understand each individual since everyone is different and you have to realize that the person youβre dealing with might have memory loss, so you canβt take everything they say or do for granted. And you must remember that this person is an individual just like you and always put that person first.
Patch: Whatβs the best thing about working with patients?
Pearly Evans: The best thing is you get to meet new people who are so wonderful in their own special way. Behind every old body is a beautiful person that has had a fabulous life. You donβt look at the old body, you look at the inside. The best part is getting to know them, who they are and who they used to be and their stories. Itβs a lot of joy and they bring a lot of joy to me.
Patch: What sets one home care provider apart from another? And how are you unique?
Pearly Evans: I am unique because I truly love and care for my clients. I do this from my heart and every individual that I care for, I treat as though Iβm caring for my own mom or dad. Iβm not doing this for the money. I feel my clientβs pain and I cry for them and with them and I laugh with them, too. I love them so much and I pray for them.
Patch: What advice would you give to someone looking to help the elderly?
Pearly Evans: Love them unconditionally. Theyβre very special. Itβs so special to reach the age of 80 or 90 or 100. Some of us might never reach that age, so we have to honor that in a respectful and unique way.
