30 Percent Of Newton Residents Have Gotten A Vaccine Dose

Seniors have received the most vaccinations.

NEWTON, MA β€” Almost a third of the city's nearly 92,000 residents have received at least one dose of the coronavirus vaccine, according to new state data released Thursday.

The state's vaccine rollout prioritizing the most vulnerable residents is bearing fruit in Waltham, where those 75 or older have received the second-most vaccinations despite making up just 8 percent of the city's population. Ninety-two percent of those 75 and older have received at least one dose, while 69 percent of them are fully vaccinated.

Seventy-four percent of those 65-74 have received at least one dose while 24 percent are fully vaccinated. That group only makes up 27 percent of all the fully vaccinated people in Newton.

Fully vaccinated residents by capita:

  • 75+ β€” 69 percent
  • 65-74 β€”24 percent
  • 50-64 β€” 19 percent
  • 30-49 β€”18 percent
  • 20-29 β€”9 percent
  • 0-19 β€” 0 percent

Overall, 27,386 of 91,690 residents in Newton have received at least one dose and 15,607 are fully vaccinated.

The Department of Public Health also released town-by-town coronavirus metrics, which showed Newton improving.

The positive test rate fell from .64 percent to .54 percent, while the average daily incidence rate per 100,000 also fell from 16.7 to 13.2

There were 169 confirmed cases in the past two weeks, bringing the number of cases since the start of the pandemic to 3,691.

The Boston College community this past week accounted for 19 percent of the cases in Newton over the past two-week reporting period, "showing welcome improvement" over the past few weeks, according to Newton Mayor Ruthanne Fuller.

The number of people who have died because of the coronavirus is 208, with five of those in the past week.

"The loss of five more of us is a powerful reminder that this virus is not gone," Fuller said in a statement. "Help save lives and avoid spreading the virus by continuing to wear masks, stay physically distanced, wash hands and stay home if you’re not feeling well. Hang in there. "
