Hundreds Of Homes, Businesses Without Power In Newton

NEWTON, MA — Some 420 homes and businesses started the day without power in Newton Wednesday morning after Tropical Storm Isaias moved through the region. By noon that number had gone up to 467, as crews worked to clear roads of tree debris.

Across the state, some 220,000 were without power late Tuesday night.

Power outages quickly mounted before leveling off at about 225,000 across the state. As of 6:30 a.m. there were 142,8374 homes and businesses still in the dark, according to the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency.

Across Newton from Gordon Street to Beacon Street and Newton Centre to the Highlands, crews were out early working to clear the roadway of trees.

Power went out along Beacon Street between Adams and Chestnut just after 7 p.m. Tuesday, when neighbors said they heard a "crumbling sound" and saw a tree had fallen across the main thoroughfare. Police blocked the road. But it wasn't until around 10 a.m. that the city was able to haul the tree away. Officials said a telephone pole needed to be replaced and that section of the road would likely remain closed for the better half of the day.

Wednesday morning on Canterbury Street in Newton Highlands:

Eversource said its online reporting system went down late last night but customers can report outages by calling them.

"Our crews will continue to work around the clock until all of our customers have their power back. We're continuing to assess the damage and estimated restoration times will post to our outage map as soon as they are available," Eversource said in a tweet.

The outage map shows it is still evaluating the outages in Newton and they have no estimated time for repair just yet.
