Blackbird Doughnut Shop Opens In Newton
The small coffee shop is known for its doughy treats, both sweet and savory.
NEWTON, MA β A doughnut shop opened quietly in Newton Centre recently. Blackbird Doughnut, which has four other locations in Greater Boston opened in the space where AtCozy boutique once was, across from the taxi company.
"Iβve wanted to be in Newton for years and have looked so many times," said owner Rebecca Roll Gullo. "Newton is such a strong community."
She told Patch that many of the shop's customers were already from Newton and Wellesley and Needham.

"They were begging us," she said. "We also brought a comprehensive coffee program because we knew this store would be a store of regulars. We wanted to make it a locals spot. "
The restaurant has been open for two weeks and now has bar stool seating along the window with a spot to plug in your phones or computers if you need to recharge. Employees tell customers, of which there was a steady stream on a recent Thursday morning, that reception has been welcoming and business hopping.

On the menu look for an array of savory and sweet donuts: from the classic Boston Creme to vegan mango mojito or everything bagel doughnut complete with sesame seeds and cream cheese.
There's also a hot drink menu, offering everything from a matcha latte to a classic drip coffee. Coffee is made with Fazenda Coffee beans, and they have oat milk, almond milk, and yes, coconut milk. Doughnuts run about $3, drinks run from $2.25 for a drip coffee to $4.75 large iced.
Gullo is not just behind this local chain, she is a familiar face around these parts, she graduated from Beaver Country Day School in Chestnut Hill in 1995. She also has an extensive culinary background. She opened The Gallows gastro pub in 2010 in the South End and then Banyan Bar + Refuge and Sally's Sandwiches. The first Blackbird opened in the South End in 2015. The doughnuts are made in the Brighton location right now.
Blackbird Doughnuts joins a number of other breakfast and coffee joints around the area, including the recently opened 11:11 Health Bar, which serves things like avocado toast and smoothies and juice, Gailit's Treats Cafe and Bakery, Central which filled a gap left when Peet's closed across the street, Rosenfeld Bagel, and of course Dunkin, Jp Licks, Panera, Starbucks and classic breakfast spots like Johnny's Luncheonette and the Station Diner.
