'Bottleneck Relief Trial' at I-90/I-95 Extended, Modifications Coming

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation recently introduced a traffic pattern change at the I-90/I-95 interchange in Weston in an effort to mitigate the bottleneck that plagues the area.

According to a press release, "The bottleneck builds as traffic from I-90 and Route 30 merge onto I-95 northbound. To address this bottleneck, MassDOT will be closing the right lane on I-95 Northbound through a temporary tapered lane closure, just north of the I-95 northbound exit 23-24-25." 

The trial, which began on July 17, was expected to continue for at least two weeks, but MassDOT announced Friday that it will extend the trial to Aug. 9 and plans to make some minor changes during the overnight hours of Monday, July 29, with the updates in place by the morning commute on Tuesday, July 30.

In response to staff observation and customer feedback, MassDOT plans to erect better signage and shift the location of the I-95 northbound lane closure slightly further south, closer to Exit 23-24-25.

MassDOT will continue to collect data, according to a press release, and "If the trial period proves successful, MassDOT will make the changes permanent by installing new signs and new lane markings later this summer."
