Councilors Want Changes Made to Newtonville Proposal

City Council members are asking developer to modify proposed six-story apartment building at the corner of Washington and Walnut Streets.

The three city councilors representing Newtonville are looking for developer Robert Korff to make some changes to his planned six-story complex, according to the Boston Globe.

The Globe said councilors Susan Albright, Emily Norton and Jake Auchincloss are requesting several modifications be made to the plan, including adding affordable units and reducing surface parking areas, amid concern from residents.

Preliminary plans for the building were revealed at a community meeting on Feb. 11. They were met with sharp criticism from residents, who worry it will change the face of the neighborhood and displace many already living in the block of buildings at an affordable rate.

The complex would house 151 one-and two-bedroom apartments, including 26 affordable units, and replace the Karoun Restaurant, Newtonville Camera and Boston Ballet School buildings. It would also displace residents in 10 apartments, according to the Globe.Β

Developers also plan to build underground parking for 190 cars and surface parking for 93 cars.

A second meeting between the developers and the Newtonville Neighborhood Council is scheduled for March 10.
