David Ortiz Hosts Charity Golf Tournament In Newton

NEWTON, MA β€” Former Red Sox Player David Ortiz raised several hundred thousand dollars for the David Ortiz Children's Fund in Newton Monday during his second annual Heart Classic charity tournament Monday.

"The tournament raised over $400,000 for the David Ortiz Children's Fund," the Brae Burn Country Club posted to Facebook Tuesday.

The money will go to the David Ortiz Children's Fund, helping low-income children in New England and the Dominican Republic who cannot afford the critical cardiac services they need.

According to a spokesperson from the fund, the tournament raised $428,994, which can provide lifesaving heart surgeries for 85 children.

Golfers played an 18-hole tournament with carnival game challenges and cocktails at each stop along the course. The tournament was followed by an outdoor cocktail gathering, according to the invitation.

"Whenever I see sick kids, it just breaks my heart," Ortiz told WBZ.
