Smoking Green Line Train In Newton Towed Away, Prompting Delays
There were more delays for MBTA commuters after a Green Line train started smoking in Newton.

NEWTON, MA β A Green Line train was towed away after it started smoking Tuesday morning, according to Newton fire officials. The train was at Eliot station when it started smoking. It prompted an evacuation and a delay on the D line, adding to the frustration that many MBTA commuters have experienced in recent months after five derailments and an upcoming fare increase.
Fire officials said an electrical issue on an overhead compressor caused the smoke. Crews turned the train's power off and it was towed away. The MBTA tweeted about the incident just after 9 a.m. Tuesday:
"D Branch: Delays of up to 15 minutes eastbound due to a train with an earlier mechanical problem."

By 9:28 a.m., the MBTA said regular service resumed. But some commuters in Brookline said they were waiting longer than 20 minutes.
And now an @MBTA transit operator just announced that the train we've been waiting 20+ minutes for "had a fire" and had to be taken out of service. No @mbta_alerts about it yet either, even tho the next train is 6-8 minutes away. #mbta #mbtaFAIL cc @universalhub @marty_walsh

Earlier this month, a Green Line train and a Red Line train derailed during separate incidents, resulting in 12 combined injuries. Boston Mayor Marty Walsh demanded the agency fix the Red Line before a 5.8 percent fare increase planned for July. The MBTA as of Tuesday still planned on instituting the hike.
