Five Things You Need to Know Today: April 30

A blood drive, a parenting lecture and the special Senate primary.

1. Special Senate primary. Today is the special primary for the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Secretary of State John Kerry. There will be both a Democratic and Republican primary today and the two winners will go head-to-head in the June 25 special election. Check out our Newton Election Guide for everything you need to know before heading out to the polls today. Remember, polls are open 7 a.m. - 8 p.m.Β 

2. Blood drive.Β The American Red Cross will host a community blood drive today at the Newton Health Care Center, 2101 Washington St. The blood drive will be held from 2 p.m. - 7 p.m. To schedule an appointment, call 1-800-RED-CROSS (733-2767) or visitΒ redcrossblood.com.

3. "Stress and Resilience in Children." The Jackson-Walnut Park Schools will welcome Dr. Leonard Sax this evening for a lecture titled "Stress and Resilience in Children." The presentation will touch on the "confusion" many parents have about the difference between self-esteem and resilience, and why resilience is more valuable than self-esteem. The free lecture will be held in the Aquinas auditorium, 15 Walnut Park, at 7 p.m.

4. Reminder: Nomination papers. Nomination papers for Newton's fall municipal election will be available in the Election Commission Office starting tomorrow, May 1. Another reminder: The Election Commission has relocated at City Hall and is now located next to the Clerk's Office on the first floor.Β 

5. One Fund fundraiser. The Chateau restaurants will host a fundraiser today for The One Fund Boston, which supports victims of the Boston Marathon bombings. The restaurant will donate 20 percent of your bill to The One Fund. The closest Chateau location to Newton is at 195 School St. in Waltham.
