Five Things You Need to Know Today: May 6

A rabies clinic, a call for artists and the annual water/sewer rate hearing.

1. Water/Sewer rate hearing. The Newton Board of Aldermen will hold a public hearing and presentation tonight on the fiscal 2014 water/sewer rates. If the aldermen feel comfortable doing so, they will also vote to approve the rates tonight. The hearing starts at 7 p.m. in the aldermanic chamber at City Hall and will be followed by the Board's regularly scheduled meeting.

2. Rabies clinic. A rabies clinic will be held this evening at Fire Station #3 in Newton Centre from 5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. Cats, dogs and ferrets are welcome as long as they are leashed or caged and accompanied by someone age 14 or older. Fee is $10.

3.Β Go Lions! The Newton South girls' tennis team and boys' baseball team will host Waltham in home matches today at Newton South. Game time is 4 p.m.

4. Call for artists. The deadline for Newton Free Library's current call for artists is this Friday, May 10. This deadline is for exhibits that will be on display at the library January-June 2014. Details and application requirements are available on the library's website.

5. Volunteer month. Following Mayor Setti Warren announced that the citywide day of community service has been extended to an entire month. Throughout this month, residents are encouraged to volunteer in the community. Looking for volunteer ideas? Check out this list on the city's website.
