Newton’s Resource Recovery Center Reopened

NEWTON, MA — Newton’s Resource Recovery Center reopened this month — after being closed amid the pandemic — for residents to drop off recyclable items.

The center is open from 7 a.m. to 3:30 Tuesday through Friday. It's open 7 a.m. to 2:30 Saturday.

You don't need an appointment to swing by the center, which is at 115 Rumford Ave., near the Waltham line.

“The site is open to all Newton residents to drop off overflow curbside recyclables and items that can only be recycled by drop-off,” Mayor Ruthanne Fuller said in a statement.

The center isn't yet taking wood furniture and overflow trash for now, but has plans to reopen more fully soon. Usually the center takes everything from appliances to oil, to batteries to textiles. It also accepts hazardous waste on special collection days.

The center also has a "Swap Shop" where residents — and the resource recovery center is only open to Newton residents— can leave a household item in fine condition they don't need any more, or even pick up one left behind. It's similar to one of those Little Libraries around town.

The Swap shop is set to reopen June 11, at 7:30 a.m. It's only open Fridays and Saturdays from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. until Oct. 30.

And speaking of Little Libraries, the center's "Book Shed" is set to reopen June 8. The site is open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays.

In July, officials also anticipate reopening the facility’s Latex Paint Exchange, the statement said.

The Latex Paint Exchange is set to reopen in July. And the Goodwill Donation Trailer is also still closed, according to the city.
