Newton's Temple Emanuel to Remember Holocaust Victims with Music

The Yom HaShoah commemoration will take place Monday, April 8 at 7 p.m.

Each spring, Jews around the world pause for a day to honor and remember those who perished in the Holocaust.

The day of remembrance -- known as Yom HaShoah -- will be commemorated with a special concert at Newton'sΒ Temple Emanuel this Monday, April 8.Β 

The live concert will feature Boston Symphony Orchestra musicians in the Hawthorne String Quartet, led by BSO violinistΒ Mark Ludwig,Β according to the Temple Emanuel website.

Ludwig is also the executive director of theΒ Terezin Music Foundation, a non-profit organization "dedicated to preserving the musical legacy of composers lost in the Holocaust and filling their unrealizedΒ artistic and mentoring roles withΒ newΒ commissionsΒ byΒ emerging composers."

During Monday's commemoration, the Hawthorne String Quartet will perform both chamber music and a choral piece created in the Terezin concentration camp, including Gideon Klein's Duo for Violin and Cello.Β

Students from the Temple Emanuel religious school will participate in the program by introducing each musical piece. A traditional candle lighting ceremony will also take place during the evening's commemoration.Β 

Monday night's Yom HaShoah event will start at 7 p.m. in the Rabbi Samuel Chiel Sanctuary. For more information, visit the Temple Emanuel website.
