Newton Takeout, Delivery Options During Coronavirus Shutdown

NEWTON, MA — All restaurants and bars across the commonwealth have been ordered to close to dine-in customers in an effort to help contain the spread of the new coronavirus until at least April 6. But local eateries are still allowed to offer delivery and takeout.

That means restaurants that depend on customers coming in and sitting down to eat and drink have either had to close temporarily or move to a pickup or delivery-only model for the time being.

Right after the governor announced the measures this week, the Newton-Needham Chamber of Commerce got on the phone with the mayor and the public health commissioner to see if they could help the restaurants.

They came up with a campaign to support restaurants, by encouraging folks to go out and eat and dine locally, for two reasons, said Chamber President Greg Reibman.

"One is to help keep these restaurants operating," he told Patch.

Even though they're working with reduced crews and have in some cases had to let go of staff, there's a lot of perishable stock. Having people order out, helps them not lose even more money in the form of food waste.

It helps to keep the restaurants functioning, but it also is an important resource for those on the front line who might not have time right now to go grocery shopping, or make food for their families, he said.

"All of our health care workers and first responders and even supermarket workers—or anyone who has gotten busy out in the job — they need a place to eat, too," said Reibman.

If enough people start picking up the phone and ordering takeout or delivery, it could help avert a permanent closure down the line.

"Once this is all over, I think the financial losses are going to be pretty severe," he said. "Some businesses may not recover."

Business owners, like Andrew Li of Flora's Wine Bar, which decided to close for the time being, say buying gift cards is helpful.

"For everyone that has purchased already...... we cannot thank you enough. It gives us hope that we will come out stronger on the other side of this," Li wrote in an email.
