Obituary: Fred Dalicandro, 74, Founder of Newton Pop Warner

A Newton High School Hall of Famer, Fred established a pop warner program in Newton more than 50 years ago.

NEWTON, MA – DALICANDRO, Frederick J., 74, of Newton, March 6, 2017. Survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Virginia (Marini). Son of the late Dominic and Theresa (Caloggero) Dalicandro of Newton. Devoted father of: Fred, Jr. and his wife Sharon of Connecticut, Judy Jones and her husband David of Maynard, Tommy and his wife Aletha of Maynard, Sharon Torcasio and her husband Pasquale of Newton, Valerie Wastcoat and her husband John of Newton, and Teddy and his wife Sara of Natick.

Loving grandfather to: Lindsay and Paige Dalicandro, Nicole and David Jones, Liz, Abbie, and Matt Dalicandro, Rebecca, Joey and Freddy Torcasio, Nikolas, Noah, and Johnny Wastcoat, TJ, Olivia, and Emma Dalicandro. Also survived by his loving sister Joannne Gorbey and her husband Jimmy of Vermont, his dear cousin Jean Caloggero of Watertown, his uncle Lou Saia of Florida, and many loving in-laws, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Freddy graduated from Newton High School in 1961 where he was a three-sport varsity athlete. In recognition of his athletic skills and personal character he received the Dickinson Award at graduation, and in 2014 he was inducted into the NHS Hall of Fame.

Fred’s commitment to young people and his appreciation for the value of sports were evident in the time he gave to coaching and managing youth sports programs. Through sheer hard work and personal sacrifice, Fred established Newton’s Pop Warner Program more than 50 years ago fulfilling his vision of providing Newton’s youth the opportunity to play football in a Pop Warner Program.

Funeral from the Magni Funeral Home, 365 Watertown St, Rt. 16, Newton, Saturday, March 11, at 9:00am. Followed by a Funeral Mass at Saint Bernard’s Church, 1523 Washington Street, West Newton at 10:00am. Interment in Calvary Cemetery, Waltham. Visiting hours Friday, 4-8pm.
