What’s Open, Closed On New Year’s Day 2021 In Newton

Here's a look at what's open in Newton on New Year's Day.

NEWTON, MA β€” On New Year’s Day, residents in Newton will leave behind a year marked by unprecedented challenge. After spending much of the year navigating the coronavirus pandemic, many will no doubt welcome 2021 with open arms.

As we ring in the new year in our town, many local spots and government offices will take the day off.

Here’s a look at what’s open and closed in Newton on New Year’s Day:

The City of Newton offices will be closed on Jan. 1 for New Year's Day, but they will be open normal hours, Monday, Jan. 4. There will be a one-day delay for trash pickup: Friday on Saturday.

  • Post Office: Closed
  • Restaurants: Open at owner's discretion
    • Jamie's On Union (formerly The Station Diner): New Years Eve: Closed At 2 p.m. New Years Day Brunch 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
    • Johnny's Luncheonette: NYE Closed at 3 p.m. New Years Day: 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
    • Cabot's: NYE Closed at 3 p.m. New Year's Day: Closed, Open Saturday at 9 a.m.
  • Retail stores: Open at owner's discretion
  • Supermarkets: Open at owner's discretion
  • Liquor stores: Open
  • Banks: Closed
  • Gas stations: Open
  • West Newton Cinema: Open.
    • What's playing: Wonder Woman 1984 daily through Dec. 31
  • Parking: Free

However, if you’re hoping to step out for some distanced shopping or dining, there are several box stores and chain restaurants that will be open on New Year’s Day.

  • PetSmart: Open regular hours.
  • Target: Open regular hours.
  • TJ Maxx: Open 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

  • Walmart: Open regular hours.
