Charity golf event a resounding success once again in Year 2!
The 2nd annual Friends of Jay Dion Memorial Golf Classic held May 24th at Juniper Hill Golf Course set new marks for success in year two.
For the 2nd consecutive year, the Friends of Jay Dion Memorial Golf Classic, now considered one of the MetroWest area's most premier charity golf events, proved a resounding success. Held May 24th at Juniper Hill Golf Course in Northborough, MA, this year's event attracting over 320 participants (golfers, guests, etc..) and set new marks for revenue-generation in support of its key charitable endeavors. This tournament is held in memory and honor of former Northborough resident Jay Dion, who fell victim to a rare and very aggressive form of cancer in June of 2016. 100% of its proceeds benefit the Dana-Farber Jimmy Fund for cancer research; Jeff’s Place (Worcester) supporting grieving families; and a college scholarship fund in Jay’s name for kids in need at Algonquin Regional High School.
This year’s event was highlighted by a beautiful 75 degree day and play on two extremely well-maintained courses, completely sold out with 288 golfers. The event featured live and silent auctions; raffles; numerous contests; a Tito’s-sponsored Bloody Mary bar; accoustic guitar and singing during happy hour; a cigar bar; buffet dinner and a live performance by Worcester-based 80’s rock cover band, The Flock. Dr. Geoffrey Shapiro, M.D., PhD, researcher from the Dana-Farber, also dropped by to share his thanks and first-hand detail on how the crucial funds raised by this tournament are helping to drive much-needed research into a cure for NUT-midline carcinoma, the rare cancer that took Jay's life.
General consensus from all participants was once again incredibly positive. One golfer, participating for the first time this year, noted the following, “...I’ve participated in a lot of these tournaments over my lifetime, and I can honestly state that this was one of the most well-run, enjoyable ones I’ve ever experienced.” Another commented, “This isn’t your typical charity golf tournament. This is an incredibly fun EVENT with a much higher level of personal and social relevance. Golf just happens to be one key part of it.”
