"I am running to amplify and empower the voices of people who are currently not represented by the Regional School Committee," she said.
The following was submitted as a campaign announcement by Mariam Ibrahimi for the race for Northborough-Southborough Regional School Committee. If you have a campaign announcement you would like published, email colleen.martin@patch.com.
Mariam Ibrahimi announced this morning that she has officially secured a spot on the ballot for Northborough-Southborough Regional School Committee. Ibrahimi, who currently serves as the Vice Chair of the Northborough Diversity and Inclusion Committee, and is a 2019 graduate of Algonquin Regional High School, is running to become the youngest member of the Regional School Committee.
“I am running to amplify and empower the voices of people who are currently not represented by the Regional School Committee,” said Mariam Ibrahimi. “When we say we want more ‘diversity and inclusion’ in our community, it means having representative voices that don’t just have a seat at the table, but have the power to make decisions. With my experience in local government as well as community organizing, I would bring valuable expertise to the committee and represent those currently not heard by the committee, including students and people of color.”
As the Vice Chair of the Northborough Diversity and Inclusion Committee, a co-organizer of the Northborough Black Lives Matter protest last summer, and a founding member of Vote Northborough working to increase youth voter turnout, Ibrahimi has worked to make the Northborough-Southborough community more inclusive.
Ibrahimi has crafted a bold, progressive plan for the Regional School Committee with input from students, parents, teachers, local elected officials, and community advocates. Her platform comprises five main priorities: ensuring an equitable COVID-19 Recovery, reenvisioning school curriculum to provide a just and equitable education, maintaining a strong relationship with teachers, empowering and amplifying student voices, and fostering a safe and inclusive environment.
“I support Mariam because I want someone who’s been a student in the district to be representing me,” says Sarah Saeed, a senior at ARHS and member of the Coalition for Equity. “Her passion for equity as well as her dedication and hardworking nature make Mariam a true school committee candidate for the people. After working under her leadership in Algonquin’s Muslim Student Association, I’m confident that she is the fresh voice that our community needs.”
Mariam Ibrahimi will appear on the ballot in the Northborough and Southborough Town Elections on May 11th, 2021. To learn more about her campaign, please visit www.votemariam.com, @VoteMariam on Facebook and Instagram, and @Vote4Mariam on Twitter.
