National Sandwich Day: Celebrate and Find Out Where to Get 'Em Cheap

NORTHBOROUGH, MA— Ah, sandwiches. The most delicious stack of yummy between two pieces of bread. Like Joey on "Friends" and Doug on "King of Queens," for many it's the perfect meal in your hands. This week, sandwich lovers rejoice, gather and celebrate with their favorite hoagies, grinders, subs and panini.

It's National Sandwich Day on Thursday, Nov. 3, and to celebrate, you need only "get in and make yourself every kind of sandwich you can imagine,"according to Days of the Year.

Apparently, we have John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, to thank for the delectable edible. Montagu loved to play cards, so he'd have his meat delivered to him between slices of bread to avoid getting any yucky grease on the cards. Others heard about it, and started ordering their food, "The Same as Sandwich."

"Sandwich Day celebrates both the Earl himself, and the wonder he brought to us in the form of the sandwich," write Days of the Year.

Lots of local restaurants, delis and sandwich shops celebrate by offering deals, and in some cases, freebies.
