NORTHBOROUGH, MA — Mariam Ibrahimi has received the unanimous support of the members of the Northborough Board of Selectmen for her upcoming May 11th contest for Northborough-Southborough Regional School Committee.
The historic endorsement is the first time all five members of the Board of Selectmen have endorsed the same candidate. Members Jason Perreault, Tim Kaelin, Leslie Rutan, Julianne Hirsh, and Scott Rogers have all thrown their support behind Ibrahimi, who is a 2019 graduate of Algonquin Regional High School and the Vice Chair of the Northborough Diversity and Inclusion Committee.

“I have the privilege of working with Mariam on the Diversity and Inclusion Committee and having the perspective of a person in their 20s has been incredibly important,” said Tim Kaelin, Vice Chair of the Northborough Board of Selectmen and Chair of the Diversity and Inclusion Committee. “I believe Mariam’s viewpoint will add tremendous value to the Regional School Committee and will help the ARHS community in many different and positive ways.”
Ibrahimi, who announced her campaign in March, would be the youngest member of the Regional School Committee and the only person of color. After seeking input from residents, Ibrahimi built a comprehensive list of priorities and solutions that are rooted in community input and student empowerment.

Her priorities range from an equitable COVID-19 recovery, centered around mental health resources for students and staff, to a comprehensive review and modernization of the high school curriculum.
“I’m running because we have a great school system, but with a young and diverse perspective on the Regional School Committee, we can be excellent,” says Ibrahimi. “I am so proud and excited that the vision we’ve built for our school community is resonating with so many people, especially the Northborough Board of Selectmen. I bring valuable expertise to the committee as someone who has recently graduated from the district. My experience in local government and community engagement will help make our school even better.”
Beyond the Board of Selectmen, Ibrahimi has also received endorsements from several other prominent community members and elected officials, including Kathleen Howland of the Northborough Southborough Regional School Committee, Lauren Bailey-Jones of the Northborough School Committee, Suzy Familo Cieslica of Northborough For Full Day Kindergarten, Kerri Martinek of the Northborough Planning Board, Kristen Wixted of the Save Bartlett Street Coalition, Sherry Clark of the Northborough Youth Committee, Sarah Saeed of the Coalition for Equity, Samantha Perlman of the Marlborough City Council, Jeanne Cahill of the Northborough Democratic Town Committee, and Ceylan Rowe of the Metrowest Commission on the Status of Women and Northborough Democratic Town Committee.
Ibrahimi will appear on the ballot in the Northborough and Southborough Town Elections on May 11. To learn more about her campaign, visit http://votemariam.com, @VoteMariam on Facebook and Instagram, and @Vote4Mariam on Twitter.
