Wegmans Hash Brown Recall is an Odd One

BOSTON - The recall of a hash browns brand for potentially including golf ball materials has expanded to Wegmans stores Thursday.

According to the Food and Drug Administration, golf ball materials may have been "inadvertently harvested" with potatoes used to make McCain Foods' frozen hash browns. The recalled products could have a choking hazard if consumed. The 28-ounce bag of frozen O’Brien Hash Browns were distributed after Oct. 21, 2016 at Wegmans in Massachusetts, Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania.

There are four Wegmans locations in Massachusetts: Burlington, Newton, Northborough, and Westwood.

Customers that have bought the products should throw them away or return them to stores. No injuries have yet been reported because of the golf ball contamination.

The original recall was for Harris Teeter and Roundy's brands in Virginia, Maryland, D.C., North Carolina, South Carolina, Delaware, Florida and Georgia. The recalled products were manufactured on January 19 and distributed after that date.

"Food safety remains a top priority for McCain Foods USA, Inc. and we have full confidence that all appropriate steps are being taken to protect our consumers, the recall announcement said. "McCain is working cooperatively with the Food & Drug Administration and Wegman’s to ensure the affected products are removed from the marketplace."
