Man Accused of Murdering Baby Doe: 'She Was a Demon'

"She was a demon anyway. It was her time to die," Michael McCarthy allegedly told Baby Doe's mother after punching her to death.

The man charged with murdering “Baby Doe,” who has since been identified as Bella Bond, was greatly interested in the occult. Michael McCarthy allegedly murdered the two-year-old toddler because he thought she was possessed and ”it was her time to die,” prosecutors revealed Monday.

McCarthy was ordered held without bail on a murder charge Monday, while Bella’s mother, Rachelle Bond, was ordered held on $1 million bail during an arraignment in Boston District Court. The two were arrested and questioned in connection to the child’s death on Thursday night.

As part of their investigations, state police detectives met with a “lifelong fried” of McCarthy, who explained that he had moved in with the couple for about a week, several months prior to the alleged murder took place.

According to investigators, Bond told McCarthy’s friend she had quit drugs. The friend, who was under the impression that Bond’s daughter was in state custody, said that was great news because she could “get Bella back.” Bond then “broke down” and said she would never see Bella again because “Michael McCarthy killed her and I’m an accessory after the fact.”

The friend told investigators he then texted McCarthy, urging him to “tell me it’s not true.” McCarthy allegedly responded by repeating the claim that Bella was in the custody of the Department of Children and Families.

The individual went on to tell investigators that he was “appalled” at how McCarthy and Bond treated Bella. The two routinely yelled at her and locked her in a closet. Additionally, he said McCarthy claimed he could see demons and ghosts.

Upon interviewing Bond, investigators learned Bella was being unruly one night in late May and would not go to sleep. She said McCarthy went into Bella’s room to calm her down. When Bond went in to check on them, she allegedly observed McCarthy with his hand on Bella’s abdomen. Bella’s face was described to be swollen and red. McCarthy had repeatedly punched her to death, Bond revealed.

Mother, Boyfriend Charged in Death of Baby Doe

“She was a demon anyway,” McCarthy allegedly told Bond after committing the murder. “It was her time to die.”

McCarthy allegedly threatened to kill Bond if she went to the police. He then dumped Bella’s body in a trash bag, placed it in the refrigerator, and later brought a large quantity of heroin into the home. He injected it into Bond’s neck to keep her sedated for several days, investigators said.

At some point, Bond told investigators, McCarthy placed the trash bag with Bella’s body inside a duffel bag and brought it to his car. He then drove to a location in the Seaport District, where he weighted it down and placed it in the water.

A woman walking her dog along a Deer Island beach in June discovered the toddler’s remains. Bella’s dead body was found dressed in white leggings, with black polka dots and no top. Also in the bag were two blankets, one of which was a black-and-white zebra print fleece blanket. The discovery sparked a three-month investigation.
