Maria’s Pastry Shop In North End Is Closing

The North End staple has been a go-to for locals wanting to avoid the lines at the more touristy spots for decades.

NORTH END, MA — An Italian bakery that’s been in the North End since the 80s is closing. Maria’s Pastry Shop will serve up its last anisette cookie in September, Eater Boston reports.

Owner Maria Merola came to Boston from Italy with her family in 1968. She bought the space at 46 Cross Street in 1982 from the folks who run Modern Pastry. It isn't flashy, but the racks of cookies Sfogliatella and lobster tails? This was where it was at. And at least once in all things off the beaten path, Boston Magazine voted it Best Cannoli.
