Mayor Menino Announces Update to Storm Response in Boston

Mayor Thomas M. Menino announced last night Boston Public Schools and city offices will reopen today, October 30. The work of public safety, public works, utility, and clean-up crews continued throughout the night and during this morning’s commute. Today's weather in Boston is expected to be mild, with temperatures in the high 60s, winds reaching 20 mph, and light rain. While we do expect some transportation-related delays, our top priority has been safety, and we’ve been assured that folks will be able to travel safely throughout the City today.

The City’s Emergency Operations Center, Traffic Center, and Unified Command Center at Boston Police Headquarters will remain open to monitor the response and coordinate city efforts through this morning’s commute.

“I am so proud of the tremendous work our people have done out in the neighborhoods and especially our residents for hunkering down and helping us by calling in problem areas,” Mayor Menino said. “Although I had to monitor progress from the Brigham, I could see even from there that our team was doing the best possible job in getting residents back to school and work.”

As of 8 p.m. last night, the City received 500 reports of tree emergencies and 211 reports of down wires, via the Mayor’s 24-hour hotline. No significant flooding was reported. The Mayor’s hotline had managed 3,913 total calls as of 8 p.m.
